What is the best character combination of PC/henchman in the original Neverwinter nights?

After much procrastination, I really want to beat Neverwinter Nights 1 so I can move on to the next one. This is mostly because I want to find out the plot of the original, and also because it has been a thorn in my side for years. Many times I have sat down to beat it but have been either frustrated with how tedious it was, or been distracted by other games or real life. As a matter of fact, once upon a time, I actually preordered the game, thinking it was going to be amazing.

The main thing I don’t like about the game is the fact that you are expected to do content that is pretty much meant for a 4 or 5 man party with only a single PC and a henchman that severely lacks in AI, especially if that henchman is a spellcaster.

So the main thing I am wondering, is what combination works best?

    Well after 5 years the game is still amazing with new content (modules) made all the time. Secondly the O.C. (original campaign) is very easy and NOT meant for a 4 or 5 man party.
    I agree that the ai for your henchman is sup-par but thats why
    this was made.

    As for what combo, the oc was made to be playable by ANY class and to what henchman, use one that complaments your character ie. if your a rogue pick a fighter or vice versa.
