How did the humans become allies with the Vortigaunts in Half-Life 2?

I remember playing Half-Life 1 and the vortiguants were our enemies, but in Half-Life 2 they are now our friends/allies. How did that come to be?

I didn’t play any of the extensions/sequels of the HL1 series, but I did play the very first one (and we were still enemies in that one), so maybe it happened in one of those sequels where we became friends.

If so, how and why did we become friends with the Vortiguants?

Thanks.

I think that they were oppressed by the government so much that they had no choice but to form an alliance and rid the world of its evil.

the vortigaunts were slaves of the combine and so were forced against their will to attack all enemies of the combine, gordon freeman included :) …i haven’t played the extensions of half life 1 but i realised in half life 2 that the ‘gaunts (my word for vortigaunts) were freed by gordon somehow, he plays a very important role in the game because he is the one who will free humanity from the combine :) even his name tells this…”the freeman” = free man…can’t wait for half life episode 3 :D to finaly waste those maggots in charge of the combine forces trapped on earth after their dimensional portal blew up in episode 1 :P

As far as i know.. maybe the vortigaunt become our allies since we kill the Nihilanth (the creature controlled the Xen creature including Vortigaunt) at the ending of HL1.

the only reason there friends is at the end of half-life 1 gman and gordon are in controll of the universe.

and gordon set them free from Nihilanth
withch is there old ruler that made them slaves.

and if you play the mod trainstations for half-life 2 you will still become there friends because you will be friends with them anyway.
